QUETTA, Feb 5: The Leader of Opposition in the Balochistan Assembly, Kachkol Ali, and chief of National Party (NP) Dr Hayee Baloch have said that recognition of ownership rights of the Baloch people over their land and coastal resources was a prerequisite to disarming the people.

QUETTA, 2 Feb 2006 (IRIN) - An apparent air of calm hangs over the sleepy city of Quetta, the capital of Pakistan's largest province, Balochistan, lying to the southwest and bordering Iran and Afghanistan.

Along the dusty, wind-swept streets, where temperatures plummet each night to below 10 degrees centigrade throughout much of the winter, vendors in woven woollen caps and heavy shawls sell dried fruit, blankets, mittens and other items on the pavements.

QUETTA, Feb 3: Ttribal elder Mir Kamal Khan Marri has condemned the arrest of the principal of the Elementary College of Kalat in Dera Ghazi Khan and called it an attempt to pressurize the district nazim of Kohlu.

Addressing a press conference at the press club on Friday, he claimed that the principal, Mir Misri Khan Marri, who is elder brother of district nazim, Engineer Ali Gul Marri, had been taken into custody on Thursday night.

Quetta: At least six people were injured on the third day of a gun-battle between paramilitary forces and Bugti tribesmen in the Dera Bugti town yesterday. Rocket attacks on Frontier Corps bases and checkpoints were reported from Loti, Kohlu and Nal areas and landmines were found and defused in other areas.

A bomb exploded on Friday near the home of a government official supervising operations against tribal militants in southwestern Pakistan, officials said.

Islamabad: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has accused armed forces of "indiscriminate bombing, killing and torture of people in the troubled Balochistan province, besides holding intelligence agencies responsible for the "mysterious disappearance" of 18 labour union leaders of a petroleum company".

Islamabad: The human rights situation in Balochistan is very grave, especially in the wake of reports of the recent military action in the province, an expert working with the US-based Carnegie Endowment for International Peace has said.
